Humans are evil, everyone knows that. It is, in fact, the whole point of the exam: pick a human, follow them through their life, and wait. What nobody mentions is how goddamn long a human life actually is. Or how complicated. Or how he, a demon apprentice, might find himself nudging things in the wrong direction; the good direction. Which is, for someone who wants nothing more than to be a demon, the wrong direction. The bright side is already brighter than the dark side is dark, and he certainly doesn’t want to be the one to make it even brighter.
Set in the universe of The Four Fourty-Four, writer and reader follow the demon apprentice through his most important exam; all of us hellbent on making sense of it.
